Sacramento gets two Veterans Day parades, and right now only one of them is a date you can actually put in a diary. Elk Grove is locked in: the City of Elk Grove has November 11, 2026 on its own events calendar, with American Legion Post 233 hosting. The big one downtown, on Capitol Mall, is run by an organisation older than most of the state’s freeways and has not posted anything for 2026 yet. Veterans Day itself is Wednesday, November 11. The other half of the day, the free meals, is less settled than the internet suggests. Every list you will find today is last year’s list. We checked.
Elk Grove: confirmed
The 2026 Elk Grove Veterans Day Parade is on the City of Elk Grove’s own events calendar for Wednesday, November 11, 2026. American Legion Post 233 hosts it, with American Legion Post 55, VFW Post 1234, Cosumnes CSD and community volunteers. It forms up at the Cosumnes CSD building, 8820 Elk Grove Boulevard, and travels to Elk Grove Regional Park along Elk Grove-Florin Road.
One thing to be careful about on that listing. The calendar entry is filed under a ten in the morning to noon window, but the text of the same entry says the parade begins at 11:11 a.m., and the organisers say 11:11 as well. Treat 11:11 as the step-off and the ten o’clock as the window the city blocked out around it.
What usually happens afterwards is worth knowing: in recent years the Elk Grove Lions Club has supplied a thousand hot dogs at Elk Grove Park once the parade finishes, cooked by the Rotary Club and the Optimist Club, first come first served, with tables set aside for veterans. That is the pattern rather than a 2026 promise, but it is a consistent one. The parade ends near Park Road and Park Way, a short walk from the Elk Grove Veterans Memorial.
Downtown: the big one, and why it is not confirmed yet
The downtown parade goes along Capitol Mall in front of the west steps of the State Capitol, and it is the larger of the two by a distance: flyovers, a ceremony, entertainment and a classic car show alongside the march. It is run by the Veterans Affiliated Council, which Governor Hiram Johnson founded in 1921 to speak for every veteran service organisation in California and which has been doing it for more than a century since.
The Council has not published 2026 details. Its own events page lists Memorial Day, Legislative Day, the Thanksgiving turkey giveaway and the Christmas toy drive, and does not carry a Veterans Day entry at all; the site still carries a 2025 copyright line. In recent years the parade has stepped off at 11 a.m. and run a loop through the blocks between 9th and 4th, with booths and food trucks along the mall. That is the shape to expect, not a schedule to plan around. We are watching and will put the confirmed route and time here when the Council posts them.
Free meals: what is actually confirmed for 2026
Same problem, different subject. Search for Veterans Day free meals right now and you will find long lists with 2026 in the headline. Open the restaurants’ own pages and the offers are from 2025. Applebee’s Veterans Day page, as this was written in mid-September, still says the free entree is available on Tuesday, November 11, which was last year’s date.
So we are not going to publish a list of offers that no restaurant has agreed to. What we can tell you is the pattern, because it is remarkably stable. The chains that run a free Veterans Day meal have run it for years, most announce in the last week of October, and the terms rarely move: dine-in only, one meal per veteran, a limited menu to choose from, drinks and tip not included, and participating locations only, which matters if you are driving in from Elk Grove or Roseville. Applebee’s has run its offer for eighteen consecutive years. Golden Corral, Texas Roadhouse, Chili’s, Denny’s, Red Robin, Cracker Barrel, Bob Evans and Buffalo Wild Wings have all been regular participants.

What counts as proof of service
This is the question that actually causes trouble at the door, and the answer is broader than most people expect. Applebee’s published terms accept a Uniformed Services ID card, a Uniformed Services retired ID card, a current Leave and Earnings Statement, a veterans organization card such as American Legion or VFW, a DD214, a citation or commendation, and, simply, a photograph of yourself in uniform. Most chains use a similar list. If you served and you do not carry a card, a DD214 or a photo is usually enough. Call the specific location first, because the offer is franchise-level and the person answering the phone is the one who will be working the door.

The veteran in your house is reading the top half of this page. If you are the one buying for him or her, this is the half that matters. Where to eat after the downtown parade
Capitol Mall puts you a two minute walk from some of the oldest dining rooms in the city. These are ranked by Insider Score, and every one is open at lunchtime on a Wednesday. Two that are not: The Kitchen scores 9.2, the highest in Sacramento, but it does not seat until half past six, and the Sheldon Inn out in Elk Grove does not open until five.
